Bread & Roses [2023]

A restoration of Gaylene Preston’s celebrated 1983 television series and theatrical film based on the early life of New Zealand social activist and feminist Sonja Davies.

Described by Bill Gosden (NZIFF) on its first release as “a breath-takingly sustained act of imaginative identification, (in which) Gaylene Preston has created a tribute to her mother’s generation of New Zealand women”, Bread & Roses is a story of triumph against overwhelming odds; an epic of common experience spanning 20 years from 1940.

Bread & Roses was selected for the retrospective programme at Whanau Marama/New Zealand International Film festival in 2023, the 30th anniversary of its premiere screening at the Festival.

Winner of Popular Choice (Audience) Award at Melbourne 1994.
